Big Island, IL Specialist, Karin Riedel, presented an Emergency Preparedness training at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo for students with and without disabilities.  Karin was invited by Susan Shirachi, Director of Disability Services, at UH Hilo, to share her knowledge and expertise with these students on Saturday, November 21, 2015.

Karin shared about the programs and services of AlLH and brought awareness of the urgency of emergency preparedness in our State.  She also discussed with the group, certain considerations that must be made for people with disabilities.  She identified all natural disasters in Hawaii along with specific considerations for each scenario.  Students were given a list of all emergency shelters on the island in order for them to highlight the shelter in their community.  They were also given a laminated list of all important emergency phone numbers.

Karin provided relevant and informative examples which captivated the students throughout her presentation.  She brought samples of a “To-Go” bag, non-perishable food, emergency kit, and a first aid kit.  She also introduced and provided brochures for the group with additional information on Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and other organizations.
