Joey has been working with AILH remotely from his home office in New Jersey since 2013. He started his work with the AILH grant writing team while providing technical assistance to the Vice Chair and Treasurer of AILH’s Board of Directors. The agency was awarded all four of the grants he participated in writing. He is extremely excited to continue his work at AILH as the Resource Developer.
Joey learned about the disability community from his mother, a special education teacher in South Bronx, NY. While in high school, he had firsthand experience serving people with disabilities as a big brother to a young man with developmental disabilities. He also mentored at-risk teens during high school and throughout his college years.
At a very young age he had direct personal experience with disability while acting as his mother’s primary caregiver during her courageous 10-year battle against cancer. Although she never went into remission, she continued her teaching career with a wonderful smile on her face.
As a young man who lost his mother in his early twenties, rather than being deterred, Joey chose to embrace his mother’s joie de vive (love of life). This is evident in Joey’s dedication and work ethic as well as his continual commitment to help individuals with disabilities achieve their goals.
