Red Cross Presents Emergency Preparedness Education

The Big Island Mixed Adult Support Group recently welcomed Debbie Weeks, Hawai’i County Director of Red Cross Disaster Services, for a presentation on emergency preparedness. After the false missile alert in the beginning of this year, the group appreciated Debbie’s insight of best practices to stay safe during a natural or man-made disaster.

The Red Cross responds nationwide to nearly 64,000 disasters each year, the vast majority of which are home fires. Group members were informed that they can sign up for free smoke alarms and installation. The Red Cross also provides free bed shakers for people who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Call the Hawai’i County Fire Department (East side at 932-2911, West side at 323-4760), all other Hawaiian Islands call your local Red Cross for more information.
