MDA 23rd Annual Legislative Forum

The Maui Disability Alliance (MDA) hosted its 23rd Annual Legislative Forum on Wednesday, September 25. The theme of this year’s event was “Respect All Ability.”

After the Mayoral Proclamation and blessing, a lively game of “Ohana Feud” ensued. Each “ohana” was made up of community members of all abilities, State Senators, State Representatives and County Council members who faced off to answer questions and earn points. The unique aspect of this game was that each team watched a “cluemerical” and the top 8 answers on the board were based on information learned in the short videos.

AILH Advocacy Coordinator, Brian Hauser is not only a member of the Maui Disability Alliance, but also was integral in the production of two very important cluemericals on the topics of HUD Housing and Crosswalk Safety.

In addition, members of the Maui VIBES group were featured in the Crosswalk Safety Cluemercial, advocating for safer crossings for individuals with visual impairment. Other cluemericals addressed the topics of person first language, visitability, employment of persons with disability, and self advocacy. It was a fun way to educate legislators and the community at large about the issues impacting persons with disabilities and present some ideas of possible solutions.
